Meet Your Instructor

Aaron Steil

Aaron Steil combines his two passions, gardening and teaching, as the assistant director at Iowa State University’s Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa and as a lecturer in Iowa State’s Department of Horticulture. He also speaks across the Midwest to amateur and professional gardeners on a wide range of gardening topics.
 
Steil co-hosts Gardening Today on WHO Radio (1040 AM) in Des Moines, a weekly call-in gardening program and serves as a regular guest on Iowa Public Radio’s weekly “Hort Friday” segment on Talk of Iowa. He received his B.S. in horticulture and biology from Iowa State University and his M.S. in public horticulture from the University of Delaware. He has previously worked at the Iowa Arboretum; Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia; and the renowned Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

An avid horticulturalist, Steil enjoys practicing what he teaches and maintains his own private garden in Des Moines where he gets to indulge his healthy obsession with shade gardening, houseplants, and growing underutilized woody plants.
